2012 Topps Triple Threads Baseball Box Break Recap and Review

Triple Threads remained relatively unchanged until last year when Topps added an additional hit per mini box.  2012 Topps Triple Threads Baseball includes a design change to the base set and parallels
for the better.  While it appears there are fewer book cards this year, the overall quality of content makes up for it.   

Topps Triple Treads Baseball falls under our premium cards category.  Each master display box
contains two mini boxes with 7 cards per mini. Every mini-box contains an autographed relic and relic card..

Please note: the Unity Auto card came out of the pack with the marker stroke already on the swatch.  I did a search on eBay for the other 9 cards.  I found 3 of the 9 and they all had markings on the swatches.  The other markings have lead me to believe that it is actually Daniel Bard's autograph that has been divided amongst the swatches.  There is not way to confirm exactly what it is, this is just my best guess.  

Overall Look

This is the year that I am happy to say I like almost everything about the base cards.  I have not been the biggest fan of the base card design in the past, but this year I like the clean design, simple foil accent, greytone background, stylish fading of the background at the top of the card, quasi art deco bordering and even the card stock.  This year Only the base parallels are numbered, leaving the regular base cards without numbering, the only thing I miss from last year. The design of the hit cards remains solid. 

Quality and Variety of Players

The majority of the checklist is high quality and in line with the feel of Triple Threads from years past.

Do the Hits satisfy? 

The absence of cheesy sayings on the Threads hit cards this year has not gone unnoticed, a welcomed change in my opinion.  Also absent this year are a lot of the dual subject book cards like Dual Rookie Phenoms, Dual Flashback Relics, and Dual Autograph Relic Pairs.  But with the absence of these dual monster hits comes a better balance throughout the entire product run. For example, the qualty level of this year’s Bat Knobs have gone way up with cards for Mantle, Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Ripken, Pujols and, once again, Musial.  But make no mistake.  There are still monster hits to be pulled from this year’s Triple Threads

For some collectors, this is a special occasion box, one that they look forward to each year and for collectors with deep products, a case is an easy purchase.  For those in the middle, this would be an excellent release for a multi box purchase.
